Plants of Concern Forays!

Join POC in searching for and monitoring a suite of species at the following sites. These are great opportunities for learning many new plants in very special places. These weekday events will begin at 8:30a.m. and continue until 1p.m., but you can leave earlier if needed. We will contact participants a week in advance with directions and more details.

Foray Dates:
Will County: Sand Ridge Savanna, Early to mid - July, Orchid species and St. John's Wort
Lake County: Illinois Beach State Park, Mid - July, Carex and Juncus species, St. John's Wort, Bog Arrow Grass
Lake County: Illinois Beach State Park, Mid - Late August, Foxglove and False Asphodel
Lake County: Illinois Beach State Park, October - Season grand-finale!, Beach species

The 2010 Plants of Concern Workshops

Join this exciting citizen science program and receive training in Plants of Concern monitoring techniques, meet land managers, talk with seasoned monitors, or refresh your skills for the new season. One workshop is required for all new POC monitors and we ask any former monitors who have never been to a workshop to attend. Bring a lunch. Morning refreshments will be served. Registration is required.

VOLUNTEER POSITION AVAILABLE: Volunteer Needed to Assist Plants of Concern, Summer Months

 

Plants of Concern is looking for a non-paid assistant who is eager to work with a wide range of rare plants and natural area sites, an experience that can assist in future career or graduate study plans. Assignment would be one to three (half) days a week (flexible hours) assisting volunteer monitors in the field and also helping with data entry and report organization in the office.

Requirements: Participate in a Plants of Concern workshop in April, or have attended a past workshop. College-level coursework in botany or ecology or equivalent experience, with basic plant identification skills. Experience monitoring with POC or another program a plus. Computer skills in Microsoft Office. Access to a vehicle.
